Taking Care of The Carer

Taking Care of the Carer

Do you look after a relative, friend or neighbour who, because of their disability or health problem, cannot manage without your help?

Then YOU are a carer and these courses are designed for you!

Lancashire College aims to help carers to take a break from their role as a full time care giver. The courses are not only a chance to learn something new but also a valuable opportunity to enjoy social activities and some well earned time to yourself!

Residential Courses

Lancashire College offers residential courses lasting for 48-hours over three days, for unpaid carers throughout the country. These specially designed courses, which run throughout the year, include a changing mixture of activities such as stress management, confidence building, complementary therapies, arts and crafts and gardening to rejuvenate the mind and body.

From £37 per person*

*Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen are unitary councils and so, for the purpose of this project, residents of these areas will be classified as outside Lancashire.

Local Courses

Lancashire College Carers Project can organise, free of charge**, tailor made ‘taster’ activities or courses for groups of unpaid carers within Lancashire. These courses can be for one day only, or over a series of days, and at any time to fit in with carers’ responsibilities.

Previous activities have included:
• stress management
• complementary therapies such as reiki therapy
• gardening
• confidence building
• computing
• crafts

Tutors can be provided for almost any topic so your groups’ suggestions are welcome. If you would like a local course organised then please call Lancashire College on 01257 276719.

New provision is currently being developed relating to skills for employment or volunteering, which may also be of interest to carers.

**Free to carers in Lancashire County Council’s area. For groups outside of Lancashire courses can be provided at a cost.

Feedback From Carers

After a weekend residential course of ‘Taking Care of the Carer: a recharge for mind and body’ at Lancashire College one group shared their personal experiences and had plenty to say!

“The tutor was very skilful in sensitively drawing out the highly emotionally charged issues involved. We were all eager to put into practice what we had learnt on our return. I felt refreshed and enabled in taking up my caring role again. We left with a tinge of sadness at parting from our newly made friends.”

“Just to have the break, with food cooked for you and beds made for you, would have been enough, but the catering was superb, accommodation clean and good, the staff friendly, helpful and attentive to your every need. Lancashire hospitality at its best!”

“I was ever so surprised that they remembered my last attendance. Actually that was my first brush with watercolour painting (excuse the pun!) and I enjoyed it so much that I had been attending the other ones arranged by Carers Link locally. I am unable to get round to touching the brush in between courses but, then again, the others in the class are the same!”
